Following the decisive change in leadership resulting from the elections in spring 2024, the new law society leadership took concrete steps to make its events accessible to all members.
-
Instead of using a traditional application system for most events, which had previously benefitted certain individuals disproportionately, we implemented a rotation system for event attendance. This system allowed a wider range of students to attend events, especially dinners and in-office legal events, and resulted in almost every interested member being able to attend at least one preferred event.
-
This year, 99.3% of members who registered their interest for events were able to participate. Last year, only 12% of applicants to events had the opportunity to attend.
-
We reduced the average cost of our dinners, in-office and social events per member from £240 to £12. Last year, for example, the society's dinners costed over £190 per person with only select few members attending, whereas this year our dinners costed under £70 a person enabling greater attendance. This enabled us to generate more spaces at events, creating greater participation.
-
Last year the society spent £18,000 on opportunities with only 72 spaces at dinners and in-office events. Alternatively, this year we spent under £5000 for the same events while making spaces accessible to over 300 members.
This is how we reached 300 attendees at dinners and in-office legal events.
This year, the Queen Mary Law Society has demonstrated a strong commitment to fairness, transparency and diversity, creating an equitable society. One of the most notable developments is that for the first time, both the president and treasurer of the society come from state schools, reflecting a broader shift towards greater representation of individuals from different backgrounds in leadership positions. This is a significant step in ensuring that the society’s leadership represents the whole student body and fosters a more collaborative culture. This year, we have students from the UK, Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czechia, Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, UAE, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, USA, Canada, Malaysia and Hong Kong on our committee, being highly more representative of the broader face of QMUL.
Through these initiatives, the new Queen Mary Law Society leadership has shown that it values engagement and is actively working to foster an environment where all members have equal access to opportunities and can engage in the society’s events and activities. This led to all society members feeling included and as having the opportunity to attend our prestigious events and be a true part of the QMLS community. This has led to stronger cohesion between the society, its members and committee as well as creating a positive, collaborative and engaging culture.
We have finally become a society that provides opportunities for all of its members.
